Practical Discipleship

Part I

This is the first of a 3-part series that teaches us how to better apply Scripture to our own lives while learning to help others do the same.

Join us Friday, September 14, 6:30-9:30pm & Saturday, September 15, 8:30am-12pm in the Chapel.

$10 registration includes materials and light snacks. Childcare is available: $5/child or $15/family maximum (amounts cover both sessions).

Part II

Join us in the Chapel Friday evening 10/26 from 6:30pm – 9:30pm and Saturday morning 10/27 from 8:30am – 12:30pm for the second of a 3-part discipleship series. “Practical Discipleship” will teach us how to better apply the Bible to our own lives as well as how to help others do the same.

In these sessions we will become equipped to face fear with love and faith, surrender anger and pride, overcome depression with hope, and help others to do the same. Part II also features sessions on crisis counseling and family (marital and parenting) struggles.

Available only to those who have completed Practical Discipleship I.

$10 Registration covers both sessions as well as materials and light snacks.

Childcare available – $5 per child or $15 family maximum (amounts cover both sessions)

Get registered today! Questions? Please call the church office at 822.1379

A little more about Practical Discipleship:

Jesus’ parting message to His disciples was for them “to go make disciples” (Matthew 28, Mark 16). Christ’s charge to us is the same; we are not only to be disciples, but are also to be making disciples. What did He mean?

We are familiar with Jesus’ words, but maybe unfamiliar with His method. When we look closely at the gospel accounts of Christ’s life, we see that Jesus walked through life with His disciples for three years, teaching them to apply Scripture to every area of their lives. That’s it! It’s that simple…and that complicated.

This three track series (six sessions each) is designed to equip any believer who wants to be more intentional and skilled in applying Scripture to their own life. It also teaches how to effectively walk alongside others, helping them to be able to do the same. This is being and making disciples! This discipleship training is highly effective because it equips people at different levels of skill and experience with Scripture along with practical Bible-based tools.

Our hope is that everyone attending COBC will attempt to shift the common paradigm that promotes churches with some disciples to a church of disciples and disciple-makers.

Track I “Foundations of Discipleship”

Helping us to be intentional about and successful with discipleship: we will learn how biblical fellowship, authentic community, and drawing out the heart create the context for a church of disciples and disciple-makers.

Track II “Tools for Discipleship”

Why is biblical discipleship different than westernized Christianity? See how the church is the perfect place for sinners and sufferers to receive hope and help from and through the gospel. Using Scripture along with skills and tools, we will learn to transform the way we disciple ourselves and others.

Track III “Targeted Discipleship – Helping Ourselves and Others”

True discipleship involves “creating disciples.” Applying Scripture in your own life is only the beginning, helping others by teaching them to do the same is the heart of discipleship. This will also feature specific training for common discipleship issues such as marriage and parental conflict, as well as teaching on crisis counseling.

30th Anniversary at Country Oaks

Thirty years ago, Country Oaks Baptist Church got its start as a small congregation meeting in Tehachapi. Since then, God has worked mightily in and through the church, raising up leaders, pastors, missionaries, and volunteers, who desire to love and serve the church body, the community, and the world. He has enabled us to bless others in ways we could never accomplish on our own.

On July 22, 2018, COBC celebrated our 30th anniversary with one special service at 10am followed by a BBQ lunch/potluck.

Thanks for joining us as we celebrated all God has done to bring us to this milestone!

Childcare:

Care will be available for children ages 0-4 during the worship service.

Children are welcome to join their parents in the service.

The Chapel is also set up with livestream and available for families with younger children who would like to enjoy the service with more ease of mobility.

BBQ/Potluck:

The church is cooking up Hot Dogs & Hamburgers with all the fixin’s. Sodas and salad will also be provided.

We’re asking our church family to bring sides and desserts.

Last Name A-K

Please bring a side dish (or non-green salad)

Last Name L-Z

Please bring a dessert

2016 Christmas Dinner – sold out

Our annual Christmas Dinner and Theatrical Production – An evening of food, fellowship and entertainment will be on Friday, December 2, 2016 at 6:00pm.

This year’s Country Oaks Baptist Church Christmas Dinner play is based on the classic short story by O. Henry, The Gift of the Magi. This is a poignant tale of two young, impoverished newlyweds, Jim and Della Dillingham living in early 1900’s New York City. They find themselves on their first Christmas Eve together with little money and no gifts for each other. As the story unfolds, you’ll find out just how far Jim and Della will go on Christmas Eve to acquire the money they need to buy each other presents. O. Henry is a master at writing short stories depicting American life, culture, and ethos. Within his bittersweet story of gift-giving, he shows that the magi were the first to practice the art of giving gifts to celebrate the birth of the Savior. Ever since those ancient times, people have expressed their sincere love by giving gifts at Christmas.

Tickets are $7 each or $30 for a family (Family = Mom/Dad plus up to four children 16 & under that still live in your home.).

October is Pastor Appreciation Month

1 Thessalonians 5:12-13 (HCSB)
Now we ask you, brothers, to give recognition to those who labor among
you and lead you in the Lord and admonish you, and to regard them very
highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.

pastor_10706c

Pastor Appreciation Month is a special time that congregations set aside each year to honor their pastors and pastoral families for the hard work, sacrificial dedication and multiple blessings provided by these special people. It is typically scheduled in October, but can be held at any time that is convenient for the church and the community. It is also important to remember that appreciation, affirmation and prayer support of our spiritual leaders is appropriate throughout the entire year.

You can drop off cards, letters, or gifts for your pastors to the church office or to the bright blue box in the church foyer on Sunday mornings. Show your love to Senior Pastor Brent Whitney, Associate Pastor Nathan Hiner, and Craig Bauer, Business Operations Manager.

New Members Class

Do you want to find out all about Country Oaks?
The Deacons and Elders are hosting a New Members Class and Luncheon on Sunday, July 23, 2017 after second service.

Can you make the following pledges taken from Thom Rainer’s book I am a Church Member?  Then you might be ready to join Country Oaks:

The First Pledge

I am a church member.

I like the metaphor of membership. It’s not membership as in a civic organization or a country club. It’s the kind of membership given to us in I Corinthians 12: “Now you are the body of Christ, and individual members of it” (I Cor. 12:27).

Because I am a member of the body of Christ, I must be a functioning member, whether I am and “eye,” an “ear,” or a “hand.” As a functioning member, I will give. I will serve. I will minister. I will evangelize. I will study. I will seek to be a blessing to others. I will remember that “if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it” (1 Cor. 12:26).

The Second Pledge

I am a church member.

I will seek to be a source of unity in my church. I know there are no perfect pastors, staff, or other church members. But neither am I. I will not be a source of gossip or dissension. One of the greatest contributions I can make is to do all I can in God’s power to help keep the church in unity for the sake of the gospel.

The Third Pledge

I am a church member.

I will not let my church be about my preferences and desires. That is self-serving. I am a member in this church to serve others and to serve Christ. My Savior went to a cross for me. I can deal with any inconveniences and matters that just aren’t my preference or style.

The Fourth Pledge

I am a church member.

I will pray for my pastor every day. I understand that the pastor’s work is never ending. His days are filled with numerous demands that bring emotional highs and lows. He must deal with critics. He must be a good husband and father. Because my pastor cannot do all things in his own power, I will pray for his strength and wisdom daily.

The Fifth Pledge

I am a church member.

I will lead my family to be good members of this church as well. We will pray together for our church. We will worship together in our church. We will serve together in our church. And we will ask Christ to help us fall deeper in love with this church because He gave His life for her.

The Sixth Pledge

I am a church member.

This membership is a gift. When I received the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, I became a part of the body of Christ. I soon thereafter identified with a local body and was baptized. And now I am humbled and honored to serve and to love others in our church. I pray that I will never take my membership for granted, but see it as a gift and an opportunity to serve others and to be a part of something so much greater than any one person or member.

Discipleship Class 2016/2017

Join the adventure of Discipleship

Climbing Higher with Christ in 2017!

Sunday afternoons @ 3:30pm – Taught by Pastors Nathan & Brent starting February 12, 2017 – no text book and no cost to attend class

Module Two – Start the Climb! (Winter 2017)

Biblical Theology & Systematic Theology

Jesus instructs the church to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them all that he has commanded. In Module One, we learned how to properly interpret the Scriptures so that we can be certain we are actually teaching what Jesus has commanded instead of replacing the meaning of his words with our own ideas. In Module Two, we will utilize these interpretative principles to see what the Bible teaches on a variety of theological topics, especially as they relate to the discipleship process. If we are to teach ALL that Jesus has commanded, we need an organized, intentional approach to knowing what the Bible says about all aspects of life. Theologians recognize two methods for doing this: Biblical Theology & Systematic Theology.

Download Schedule Here

Class Date Topic Big Questions that Will Be Addressed
2/12/17 Biblical Theology vs. Systematic Theology Does the discipleship process include demon deliverance?
2/19/17 How to Disciple using Systematic Theology How is systematic theology going to solve all my problems?
2/26/17 Who is God? (Theology Proper) If God is all good and all powerful, why is there so much evil?
3/5/17 The Trinity If I have to submit to someone, does that make me inferior?
3/12/17 Who is Man? What is his problem? If God loves sinners, why is there a hell?
3/19/17 What is Salvation? If I can’t lose my salvation, why am I still trying to please God?
3/26/17 Election If God chose me, do I really have “free will”?
4/2/17 Spiritual Gifts Are tongues, prophecy and healings for today?

Module One – Essential Equipment (Fall 2016)
