What do the COBC By-laws say about hiring a new Senior Pastor? Excerpted from the COBC By-laws Section 5: Pastoral Staff:

When there is a vacancy in the position of Senior Pastor, the Elders shall immediately appoint a Pulpit Council consisting of at least two Elders, one Deacon, and two members of the congregation in good standing.

The Council shall interview candidates and make recommendation to the Board of Elders. They in turn shall present the candidate to the congregation for evaluation & consideration.

The Board of Elders will upon adequate consideration by the congregation poll the church membership by ballots as input into the final decision to call a candidate as Pastor. A two-thirds majority is necessary to proceed in the selection process.

The vote shall be taken at the next *special or annual meeting with those members in good standing and who are of legal voting age eligible to vote. The vote shall be by ballot.

From the Elders -

Read from the pulpit on Sunday, June 8, 2014 by Mike Bourcier

When I last spoke to you it was about Pastor Walker’s desire to step down as Senior Pastor and remain a part of the COBC staff. His decision required the Elders to appoint a Pulpit Selection Committee. Per our church Constitution and Bylaws, the Elders appointed a Pulpit Committee to begin the task of recommending a new Senior Pastor. We tasked them to look internally first, and to consider and evaluate Pastor Brent Whitney for the job. The committee was made of Elders Floyd Jones, Jim Boyd, Elder Rich Engel. Deacon Skip Main, and church members Dave Wilson, Jim Hutson, and Gayle Patterson.

Their work began on April the 15th. They interviewed church members, developed questionnaires, and finally interviewed Pastor Whitney. At the end of their evaluation they have unanimously recommended Pastor Whitney for the job of Senior Pastor. Last Thursday evening the Elders accepted their recommendation and now it is our recommendation to you. We recommend him without reservation. He is very qualified and meets the standards expressed in Scripture.

Our Constitution and Bylaws require a 30 day review process where every church member is encouraged to call or drop in a see Pastor Whitney for the purpose of getting to know him, his family, and his passion for Scripture, teaching, and shepherding the people of COBC.  On 22 June we have scheduled a Question and Answer period to support the review process. We will put Brent and perhaps Jennifer on the “hot seat” so we can collectively ask those questions together. Afterwards we will have a dessert social before going home. This is designed to help you in your review process.

On 29 June will will conduct our next New Members Class here at the church with those who have expressed an interest in becoming members of the COBC family. This will happen immediately after the second service on 29 June. Our Constitution requires that you be a member of COBC in order to vote on accepting Pastor Whitney as our new Senior Pastor. In addition to being a member, you must be18 years old or older to vote. Children under the age of 18 can become members but cannot vote until they are 18 years old or older.

On 13 July we will hold a Special Business Meeting to conclude the 30 day examination period and the congregation will be polled by ballot. A two thirds majority is required to appoint Pastor Whitney to the position of Senior Pastor. The ballots will be counted by a committee of Elders, Deacons, selected church members, and staff. Those results will then be announced to the church that evening. July is a busy month, some of you will be traveling or on vacation when the polling (voting is taken). We are going to allow members to vote by absentee ballot for this purpose. Ballots and envelopes will be available in the church office starting on the 30th of June. Absentee ballots will be accepted in the church office through close of business on 11 July.

Thank you for your continued support of the process, your participation in the process, and for your continued prayers as we continue to move forward in the selection process.
